Happy Holiday Hosting: Stress-Free, Low-Budget Tips

Holiday Hosting on a Budget

Winter is coming! Okay, maybe it’s already here. Cider has gone from ice cold to steaming hot, blankets have been unpacked from their storage bins, and kids everywhere are finding out if they’ve outgrown last season’s jackets. Holiday hosting has snuck up on us again, and Thanksgiving is just around the corner!

Here at American Freight, we’re excited it’s hosting time. However, we know holiday hosting can be expensive, and time consuming, so we have some suggestions for hosting a November or December you’ll remember, from furniture to budget-friendly, memorable details.

Don’t forget: holiday hosting should be a fun and exciting time to gather friends and family, and not a stressful task on the to-do-list. Check out our handy holiday hosting tips, and don’t forget the most important thing: Have Fun!

Seating’s Greetings

Family Sitting on Couch

One way to make people feel welcome and comfortable is having lots of seating. No one likes to awkwardly stand around, so make sure to set the tone with plenty of available seats.

Strategically placing accent chairs, re-purposing chairs from the dining room table, or picking up extra chairs before your event are all great options. Check out our wide selection of accent chairs and more here.

Go with the Flow

Create a pathway in your public party areas. Can you easily walk a pathway to the bathroom, to the kitchen, and through the living room? Make it easy for your guests to get around. Have a bar area or snack table? Make sure they’re accessible.

If your living room is smaller than you’d like it to be (whose isn’t?!), check out this recent blog post we shared on small living room ideas, chock full of space-saving suggestions for holiday hosting.

Signature Drink to Clink

Please note: your signature drink doesn’t have to be alcoholic! Holiday hosting is all about bringing people together. Naming a cider, juice, or mocktail for your party will make everyone feel special. Even something as simple as “Cyndy’s Cider” is sure to add some holiday cheer and a special touch to your event. The internet is full of ideas, but we love this recipe for hot spiced cranberry cider. A fitting flavor for all upcoming holidays, feel free to rename it to fit your style.

Check out our wide selection of cocktail tables, pub sets, and end tables here for more surface space or to set up a makeshift bar.

DIY Photo Booth

You don’t even need a “real camera” for this to be a hit! These days, everyone has a camera in their pocket on their phone. Just set up an area with a backdrop, with lights or snowflakes. Add some props from around the house like hats, scarves, Halloween costumes, garland, or pick up some seasonal (and affordable) pieces from a local store to add extra holiday flavor.

Make a unique hashtag for your event to see the fun unfold on Instagram all night, then have memories to look back on with friends and family. Check out our extensive offering of lamps here for affordable lighting options.

Homemade Decorations

Homemade Paper Snowflake

Why spend extra money on decking the halls? You can make garland, ornaments, string popcorn, hang lights, and set up a cornucopia all using affordable, homemade goods. You can even recycle gift bags to cut back on waste and cost if you plan ahead this season.

Paper snowflakes are a fun activity to do with kids or with friends on a girls-night or a wine-night if you’re feeling crafty. We love this step-by-step guide on making snowflakes from Martha Stewart.
